Advent in Zagreb 2026: Dates, Best Locations and Practical Tips

Every winter Zagreb turns into one of Europe’s best-loved Christmas destinations. Advent in Zagreb was voted Europe’s Best Christmas Market three years running, in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and it still fills the city centre with lights, music, mulled wine and wooden stalls from late November into the new year.

When Is Advent in Zagreb 2026?

Advent in Zagreb 2026 officially runs from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027. The City of Zagreb has also allowed a warm-up from 25 to 27 November, so some locations may open a few days early.

For six weeks the centre becomes one walkable festival: Ice Park on King Tomislav Square, the lights of Zrinjevac, stalls on Ban Jelačić Square and smaller Advent corners in the Upper Town and beyond. The squares and parks are free to walk around; you pay for food, drinks and activities such as skating.

King Tomislav Square – Ice Park

Ice Park, Zagreb’s open-air skating rink, sits in the heart of the city, right across from the main railway station. It’s one of the most iconic Advent locations in Zagreb, with historic buildings framed by festive lights, music and the buzz of skaters and visitors.

In 2025 Ice Park opened on 29 November with a Nutcracker show on ice and stayed open until 7 January. Skating runs in one-hour sessions, with short breaks to resurface the ice.

Food & Winter Treats at Ice Park

If you stay a little longer, the stalls around the rink are an easy excuse for a warm-up and a bite to eat: hot sausages, hearty stews, crispy fritule, mulled wine and seasonal snacks you can eat while walking. Last season the food huts stayed open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Fooling Around – Oleander Terrace at Esplanade

A few minutes’ walk from Ice Park, the Oleander Terrace of the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel becomes an elegant Advent spot, with carefully prepared dishes and creative cocktails in a relaxed but polished setting.

Throughout the season the music changes often, from acoustic sets and Latin dance nights to R’n’B and the energetic FRKA sessions. In 2025 the terrace was open from 26 November to the end of December, with free entry and nine restaurant and bar “wagons”.

Fuliranje – Strossmayer Square

On Strossmayer Square, Fuliranje is one of the most imaginative Advent spots in Zagreb. It draws all ages, with handmade crafts and jewellery, children’s performances during the day and live music or DJs in the evening.

In 2025 Fuliranje ran from 26 November to 7 January, with 16 food and drink huts, music every day and a programme for families.

Fuliranje is one of the best stops for food and drinks, mixing classic Advent comfort food with more modern street food, warm seasonal drinks and a range of flavoured rakija. It’s a lively place to try a few dishes before moving on to the next location.

Advent on Zrinjevac

On the walk from King Tomislav Square to Ban Jelačić Square you’ll pass Zrinjevac, one of Zagreb’s most charming Advent locations. The historic park becomes a glowing winter promenade lined with stalls selling handmade souvenirs, local crafts, traditional treats and holiday gifts.

Concerts at the bandstand, DJs, children’s shows and classical music on Sunday afternoons set a calm but lively rhythm. In 2025 Zrinjevac ran from 29 November to 7 January, with free entry.

Food & Seasonal Treats

Zrinjevac is known for its lights and artisan stalls, and it’s also a good stop for a warm drink and something small to eat. The stands mix traditional flavours with creative holiday specials, easy to enjoy while you stroll or listen to the music.

Ban Jelačić Square – Baš Naš Advent

In 2025 Zagreb’s main square hosted Baš Naš Advent: five glass pavilions telling stories of hidden Zagreb, old postcards and forgotten corners of the city, with audio narration available through QR codes, including for visitors with visual or hearing impairments.

In the evenings the square came alive with live music and DJs, and weekends had programmes for children. The city has again planned Advent stalls on Ban Jelačić Square for 2026, but whether Baš Naš returns under that name hasn’t been announced yet.

The stalls on the square serve savoury and sweet specialities, including štrukli, warm fritule and gourmet sausages, alongside mulled wine, winter cocktails and other warm drinks.

EU Advent – European Square

A short walk from Ban Jelačić Square, EU Advent on European Square is one of the most music-filled Advent locations, with concerts, live performances and DJ sets throughout the season. In 2025 the programme mixed music, local food, theatre and charity activities.

EU Advent offers a varied food selection for all tastes: savoury and sweet, warm and cold dishes, and plenty of traditional Croatian food.

Caffe de Matoš – Upper Town

In the Upper Town, on the eastern part of the Strossmayer Promenade, Caffe de Matoš brings a charming, slightly nostalgic holiday feel to one of the best viewpoints in the city. It’s named after the Croatian poet and writer A. G. Matoš.

Visitors can enjoy a daily programme of young bands, from folk and pop to Balkan rhythms and blues, plus DJs and children’s shows. In 2025 Caffe de Matoš ran from 27 November to 7 January.

Alongside a wide choice of drinks, Caffe de Matoš serves warm sausages and other hearty dishes, ideal while you take in the music and the view over the city.

Jinglingz – Kvaternik Square

Advent in Zagreb reaches beyond the historic centre to Kvaternik Square, about ten minutes away by trams 11 and 12. Known locally as “Kvatrić”, it’s a lively neighbourhood spot with food and drink huts, live music, DJs, photo installations and workshops.

Mornings belong to families, with workshops for children, and the evenings to music. In 2025 Jinglingz ran from 29 November to 7 January.

The food stalls at Jinglingz serve festive treats such as fritule, desserts and freshly made sandwiches, a good mix of sweet and savoury between workshops and concerts.

Events During Advent 2026

These events are already confirmed for the Advent season. They’re organised separately from the official Advent programme:

• Zagreb Advent RunZonar Zagreb (6 December 2026 at 12:00)5 km and 10 km races starting from Trg Krešimira Ćosića 9. Entry costs €33 until 1 November and €40 from 2 November.
• Lang Lang and the Zagreb PhilharmonicLisinski Concert Hall (11 December 2026 at 20:00)The star pianist performs with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. Tickets are sold through the orchestra’s website.
• Jacques Houdek: “Kad si sretan”Lisinski Concert Hall (6 December 2026 at 10:00)A morning concert in Lisinski’s Great Hall, with tickets at €25.

The official outdoor concert programme and the New Year’s Eve celebration on Ban Jelačić Square haven’t been announced yet.

Getting Around During Advent

• On footThe main locations, from King Tomislav Square past Zrinjevac to Ban Jelačić Square and the Upper Town, are within an easy walk of each other, and walking between them is part of the experience.
• By tramLines 2, 4, 6, 9 and 13 stop near Ice Park, and lines 11 and 12 reach Kvaternik Square in about ten minutes.
• FunicularThe Upper Town funicular reopened in May 2026 after renovation. It runs every day from 06:30 to 21:50, every 10 minutes, and a single ride costs €0.66.
• By carParking near Ice Park is limited; the nearest large garage is Importanne Center, with around 500 underground spaces. During Advent 2025 several central streets closed in the evenings, and trams between Ban Jelačić Square and the main station could pause from 18:00 to 23:00, so if you can, leave the car outside the centre.
